Postnatal Care in Dundrum

Helping you feel more like yourself again

The weeks and months after having a baby can be wonderful, exhausting, and physically demanding all at once. Many women expect to be tired, but are surprised by how much their back, neck, shoulders, pelvis or wrists can ache from feeding, lifting, carrying and spending long hours in unfamiliar positions.

Whether you’ve had a vaginal birth or a caesarean birth, my aim is to help you understand what’s happening in your body, support your recovery, and help you feel more comfortable and confident in everyday life again.

You don’t need to be “back to normal” before booking an appointment. I’ll meet you where you are and work with you to create a plan that feels realistic and achievable for this stage of life.

Common reasons new mums come to see me

Many women come to see me because their body still doesn’t feel quite like their own after pregnancy and birth. Common reasons for booking an appointment include:

  • Back pain after birth
  • Neck and shoulder pain from feeding or carrying your baby
  • Wrist and thumb pain (“mum thumb”)
  • Pelvic or hip pain
  • Pelvic floor symptoms such as heaviness, weakness and leaking.
  • C-section scar discomfort or tightness
  • Abdominal weakness or feeling unsupported through the middle
  • Returning to exercise after pregnancy
  • General aches, stiffness and fatigue

Postnatal assessment

I also offer a dedicated postnatal assessment for women who would like a more comprehensive review after pregnancy and birth. This appointment looks at how your body is recovering, including posture, movement, abdominal function, pelvic floor symptoms, breathing patterns and readiness for exercise.

Many women choose this appointment even if they’re not in significant pain, simply because they’d like reassurance, guidance and a clearer understanding of what their body needs during recovery.

How I approach postnatal care

Recovery after birth is rarely a straight line. Some women feel physically sore, others feel weak or disconnected from their body, and many are simply trying to cope with the demands of caring for a new baby while recovering themselves.

My approach is gentle, practical and tailored to your stage of recovery. I’ll take the time to understand how you’re feeling, what you’re finding difficult, and what you’d like to get back to, whether that’s walking comfortably, lifting your baby without pain, returning to exercise, or simply feeling more like yourself again.

Treatment may include hands-on osteopathic treatment, movement assessment, breathing and abdominal assessment, advice on lifting, feeding and carrying positions, and simple exercises that feel achievable in everyday life. You won’t leave with a complicated rehabilitation programme.

Babies are very welcome at postnatal appointments. I know childcare isn’t always easy to arrange, and many women bring their baby along to the appointment.
